Coastal Clean-up '06 pictures
We had a lot of fun this weekend attempting to nearly
single-club-edly (so to speak) remove a significant
amount of debris that was NOT supposed to be at the
bottom of the sea! Aside from the 7 DCOSV members
that were in rare form, working hard to clean-up the
Bay, we had Fritz and Jeff and Scott Rude also helping.
That was it! Last year it was well organized and we
had dozens of divers working hard to get the Bay a bit
cleaner. This year, only 10 total divers!
(Oh well, perhaps we as a club should step-up and try
to make something a bit more significant for future
events, and get other clubs to co-participate!)
Anyway, thanks to Ryanfs persistence, hard-work, and
gentle persuasion, he convinced the Harbor Master to
allow us to dive along Wharf #2 (the commercial pier)
as long as we had a boat tending the divers. (Had the
Harbor Master more advance notice, he could have
provided us with a volunteer and a power boat like
last year, but this turned out to be quite fun!) I
brought along two Sea Kayaks (thanks Harry!) and on
the first dive Tim and John skippered the Kayaks while
Ryan, Fritz, Tod, Jason, Gia, and I did the first round
of clean-up work. On the second dive, I skippered a
Kayak while Ryan and John did an amazing recovery act!
Tod and Jason acted as the human hoists, lifting the two
largest items directly out of the Bay and onto the pier!
Afterwards we had a terrific Sushi Feast at the Sapporo
Restaurant (on top of the London Bridge Pub.)
RUNNER-UP (not sure who brought it up)
Deep Sea Fishing pole
FIRST PLACE WINNER brought up by Ryan & John
A stainless steel fishing chair that we estimated at
weighing about 40 pounds (Nice use of the lift-bag, Ryan!!!!)
AND THE GRAND PRIZE brought up by Ryan & John
A 15 speed Mountain bike! (It was so far away from the
pier that there was some speculation that it was ridden
off at high speed!)
All in all, it was a grand day, and we feel a LOT better about the
cr*p-reduction that we did in the Bay! Of course we left anything that
had become part of the ecosystem and either had someone living in it or on
it.
